Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis, otherwise known as Eczema is a common skin condition that causes periods of inflamed skin which become itchy and dry.

What are the symptoms?

Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) symptoms can appear anywhere on the body and vary widely from person to person.

Symptoms include:

  • Dry, cracked skin

  • Itchiness

  • Rashes or swollen skin

  • Small, raised bumps

  • Oozing and crusting

  • Thickened skin

  • Darkening of the skin around the eyes

  • Raw, sensitive skin from scratching

Causes

Atopic Dermatitis is most common in young children but it can occur at any age. As many as 15% to 20% of people experience eczema or another form of dermatitis at some point in their lives. Low humidity (dry air) can dry out your skin, and sweating caused by high heat can make the itchiness worse.

Eczema is caused by various immune issues, genetic issues, environmental triggers and can be caused by stress.

Diagnosis

Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic condition, typically found on your hands, neck, inner elbows, ankles, knees, feet and around your eyes. It will be diagnosed by a skin examination.

When there is doubt, they may perform the following tests:

  • An allergy skin test.

  • Blood tests to check for causes of the rash that might be unrelated to dermatitis.

  • A skin biopsy distinguishes one type of dermatitis from another.

How it is treated conventionally?

There are treatments to manage symptoms, but unfortunately, there is no cure. Oftentimes topical steroids or moisteners are prescribed by a GP or consultant.

How does Surrey Centre for Nutrition work with Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis?

The predominant focus on supporting a client with eczema will involve identification and support for gastrointestinal imbalances, food reactivities and chemical sensitivities. It is often necessary to support the health of the lining of the gut in addition to identifying the health of the microbial balance of the gut and the presence of any pathogens. Remember with eczema what we see on the skin is not the disease state itself it is merely the physical manifestation of an underlying disease state or imbalance. By identifying these imbalances or causative factors we can target these for long term remission rather that just trying to soothe or reduce the symptoms present on the skin itself.

There is always the question around what else was going on for a client with eczema. What occured at the time of onset for them. Working backwards like this can help us get to the true root cause.

I also always look at what is present in a client’s environment in terms of chemicals used in their home and work environments, personal hygiene and cosmetic products along with mold exposure.

I would often then look at ensuring the client has optimal levels of nutrients through food and supplements where necessary to ensure skin healing and immune balance.
