Depression

Depression is a mood and mental health disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called a major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living.

How does Surrey Centre for Nutrition work with Depression?

When we are dealing with depression it is important to note that there may be depression relating to a situation or event in someone’s life or depression resulting from an underlying biochemical or physiological imbalance. The functional medicine approach that we would take would be different depending on which of these causative factors are present. Using functional and nutritional case work and analyses we will be able to identify the triggers of the onset of your depression and from here determine our approach going forward and any relevant investigations such as nutritional and functional testing that may be required.

Our role in the approach to depression which is linked to a situation or event will often involve supporting the client with nutritional interventions in order to allow for the greatest mental resilience to the situation with which the client is presented.

When we consider depression that is present without a situational trigger we need to dig deep to understand what the imbalances are present for that client which have resulted in the symptoms. Some key areas of investigation may include gut health (due to the fundamental impact of poor gut health on brain health via what is known as the gut-brain axis), identification of nutritional deficiencies or insufficiency of nutrients which are key in supporting brain health, identification of neuroinflammation, neurotransmitter imbalance, autoimmune disease, food reactivity etc. Your health timeline and dietary analysis will help us to understand the most likely cause of your depression, and we will use functional testing to see what can’t be seen and get a greater depth of information. From here we will use a nutritional and lifestyle approach and protocols to target any imbalances identified to support you back to a point of health.
