CFS/ME Thyroid

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also called chronic fatigue syndrome or ME/CFS, is a long-term condition with a wide range of symptoms. The most common symptom is extreme tiredness.

The most common symptoms include:

  • Extreme fatigue – you may find it very hard to do daily activities

  • Still feeling tired after resting or sleeping

  • Taking a long time to recover after physical activity

  • Problems sleeping, such as waking up often during the night

  • Problems with thinking, memory and concentration

Other symptoms:

  • Muscle or joint pain

  • Headaches

  • Sore throat

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • Feeling dizzy or sick

  • Heart palpitations

Causes

ME is more common in women, and tends to develop between your mid-20s and mid-40s. Unfortunately, it is not known what causes ME/CFS, however there are multiple theories.

Suggested causes or triggers include:

  • Viral infections

  • Bacterial infections

  • Immune system issues

  • Hormone imbalances

  • Genes

Diagnosis

There are no specific tests for ME/CFS, so it is typically difficult to diagnose. Your medical professional will rule out other conditions that could be causing your symptoms. Blood and urine tests may be carried out to deduce this.

How it is treated conventionally?

Treatment will aim to relieve symptoms as there is no known cure.

Treatments include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Energy management

  • Medicine to control symptoms such as pain and sleeping problems
