Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties.

It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also develop for the first time in adults.

There's currently no cure, but there are simple treatments that can help keep the symptoms under control so it does not have a big impact on your life.

Symptoms include:

  • A whistling sound when breathing (wheezing)

  • Breathlessness

  • A tight chest, which may feel like a band is tightening around it

  • Coughing

The symptoms can sometimes get temporarily worse. This is known as an asthma attack.

How does Surrey Centre for Nutrition work with Asthma?

A functional medicine approach to asthma aims to address any underlying imbalances that may be causative in the disease state. We would look to understand food, and possibly chemical and pathogenic reactivity and determine if either of these may be exacerbating the condition. Alongside this we would work to identify any reasons for the hyper reactivity of the immune system and modulate the body’s immune response so that it becomes less reactive. As a part of immune modulation we may investigate any imbalance in gastrointestinal health (because the gut is a key mediator in immune activity) and work to target any concerns identified.

At the SCfN we take a deep dive into your health history to understand what these underlying causes and triggers may be, often followed by functional testing where necessary. Using all the information we collect through our functional medicine case review and test results we will put together a targeted nutritional, dietary and lifestyle plan to address what we have identified.
